Laredo Fire Department Academy Cadets to Graduate
Thirty Three Fire Academy Cadets are set to graduate tomorrow
Friday February 8, 2013 at 9:00A.M. The ceremony will be held at the Laredo Civic Center Auditorium.
It was confirmed to me that Charlie San Miguel's sons are in this graduating class. The city has stayed mum on the whole issue of nepotism concerning the councilman and his sons, Carlos and Roberto.
The city council got creative in giving the San Miguel family preferential treatment by trying to incorporate nepotism rules into the fire department hiring process. But this little diversion is meaningless since the application for the fire department already includes the question about any relation to the mayor, or city council. If it's asking you about a relation to a city official, then the reason for the question being there is to avoid any type of nepotism from taking place.
Charlie San Miguel has really settled in to his position quite nicely. He gets to name a new pool after his parents. His sons get a pass. And his sister gets a nice city contract. Yes, it's good to be a San Miguel.
UPDATE: Some people don't get the perks that the San Miguels get. (name and dates have been blocked out for privacy)

The city attorney found no nepotism existed so they did nothing. End of story. Move on from this non story dude.

Section 12.04 Nepotism
No person related within the second degree by affinity or within the third degree by consanguinity to the Mayor, any Council Member, any elected City official, City Manager, or any member of any City board or commission shall be appointed to any office, position, clerkship, or other position with the City. This prohibition shall not apply, however to any person who shall have been continuously employed by the City for a period of two (2) years or more prior to the election of the Mayor, Council member, or elected official or to the appointment of the City Manager or member of a board or commission related to such appointee in the prohibited degree.

Keyrose read carefully. No person shall be "appointed" to any position, etc... No one was appointed. They applied and were chosen just like everyone else. Move on nothing to see here folks. Just a bunch of rabble rousers. Get over it.
They cannot apply like everyone else because they are not like everyone else- they have a close relative on the council-unlike everyone else. You're nit-picking with "appoint". Good job KeyRose.
There have been others who have been denied employment because of a relation to a council member.
Look at the application that both San Miguel brothers filled out when they applied to the department. They were asked about family history.
If you can't see that this is nepotism, then you just don't WANT to see that it is.
Keyrose, the document you posted is very interesting. It illustrates that the city picks and chooses who they want to fire and hire. The old patron system at its best. How can they justify hiring two individuals when others got fired. Has anybody confronted our elected officials concerning this matter.
The boys applied BEFORE Sam Miguel was elected if I remember correctly.
IF you remember correctly. Then San Miguel should have not run for office and jeopardize their employment.
If I can't see that this nepotism then I guess I'm in the camp that sees this correctly. As far as not picking with the word appoint....that is what the document says. It does not say hire which is completely different. You are trying to make the document fit your argument. It just doesn't fit. Kind of like the definition of what "is" is. Remember that one slick Willie.
The brothers San Miguel completed their applications shortly before their father was elected, but they were hired well after Charlie San Miguel won.
Here's the link where I include the actual applications:

Why do people seem to justify the employment.. The document posted indicates that the city fired an individual for nepotism. Its in black and white. How much more evidence do you need..
On this site, it's not “people” (plural) justifying their employment, its one person with blinders on. Or is he or she simply a San Miguel family member or Charlie himself? The guy should have been re-called after the Mud Race shenanigans, but Eso es Laredo.
arguing whether nepotism exists in laredo is absurd.
Government jobs by political favor is laredo. Always has been.
Primary reason laredo standard of living and lack of
Private sector wealth creation are never ending problems
If its only one person with blinders on then why did the kids get through the training? Why are they still there? It's because legally there is no case. If there was then they would be out. To say "asi es Laredo" is a quick cop out. You can't just ignore laws, mandates etc... And get away with it. Surely anyone of you political bashers could bring the case forward if there was any type of violation. It's just not there despite your animosity.
Charlie, ran as a christian and used God to get elected. He has cursed his family and they will be punished... Charlie pretends to read the bible but lives the life of a sinner. His family may be reaping the rewards of his sin but his ungodly ways will lead to his fall....For the wages of sin is death.
...The Laredo Way!
You choose to ignore the example provided by keyrose citing a case in which a Laredo was fired because of Nepotism. So you see there's more than one perso with blinders. There's a whole bunch of persons with blinders including the city council and staff. There's a warehouse full of blinders-enough to go around.
Let's say San Miguel were to run for re-election. Will his sons then be violating the nepotism laws? Will they be asked to resign like the last person in the blacked out document?
Marinate on that one folks.
The twins should not be hired in the first place to worry about the re-election. If the city managed to loop them in by ignoring nepotism then why would they even worry when re-election comes around. I inquired about the situation and the Texas Attorney General is the one who can enforce the violation.
Once you get into office locally you can get whatever you want! San Miguel glazes everything over by being exaggeratingly religious publically, so he couldn't possibly be seen as a "bad guy." Take for instance the recent wetlands vote. It was appalling how they treated Trisha Cortez and all who were going to speak for saving the wetlands. The council ALREADY KNEW what they were going to do so they didn't want to bother hearing EVERYONE democratically. They don't really listen after they are elected! They go with the flow, they don't want to ruffle any feathers, and they want to serve THEIR OWN interests...not the constituents!
So this Nepotism rule will NEVER really apply to anyone it should really cover! The examples of taking advantage of the system are so numerous that I have no hope for any honesty in our City government!!!
Come on run with Charlie, remember his promise of the yearly poll so the district residents could have an input into the problems they faced. Two years have passed, so where is the poll?
This town sux. The end.
