Mixed News Thread

A reader in the previous post voiced disappointment at my lack of acknowledgement about the recent tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School.  I've been out of the loop, so to speak, since I left home early Friday morning.  Blogging on the go is not one of my strong points.  At any rate, I don't know what to say about the shooting other than I can't wrap my head around the fact that some deranged individual shot down twenty kids.  Seeing images of people who were related to the victims cry out in horror leaves me dazed.  I'm having trouble processing this; I can't imagine what they're going through.

I haven't gone through all the facts concerning this incident.  Perhaps I'll take some time to discuss what happened later this week, and comment on what should happen next.  But if somebody wants to ask me a specific question, I can always be reached through email by clicking on my 'Keyrose' link.

In scanning local news today, I noticed that Jorge Vera won his runoff race.  Good for him.

And In another LMT story, I read that the city spends quite a bit in hosting events.  Whatever.

Comment on anything you'd like.  I'll be back at home base very soon.

Obama spoke there tonight. He wanted to say something about guns, but didn't. Only eluded to it.

The signs were there. People at school knew this kid was crazy..the school called him "special"...so did his mother. Crazy is crazy and now the children are dead. I blame the mother...I blame the school...I blame society. Mostly the mother having those eapons with her crazy son around. Crazy means crazy.

Gun ownership is a great responsibility.
The mother, owner of the guns, failed in that she did not secure her firearms

Amazing how we guard gold, nuclear plants, airports, Area 51 with heavily armed guards yet we fail to guard our most precious treasure, our children.

Instead of spending billions of foreign aid to countries who hate us, we should use that money to provide armed officers at every school in this country.

agree, it is times like these that remind us how pitifully
irrelevant Laredo politicians are

There are armed officers at schools. Truant officers and ISD officers. Get the facts straight before you decide to comment on things you obviously have no idea about.

Even though armed officers are at schools, the reality is there will be death. Maybe a little maybe none. Take Oregon for example; an armed civilian confronting the gunman was all it took for the gunman to shoot himself. Why not arm responsible school officials the way we arm pilots?

Lets hear those democratic responses now.......

I am a more...conservative democrat....(if that makes sense)
And I have to agree anonymous. Responsible individuals should be able to carry weapons provided they are trained and won't shoot at the first thing that sneezes behind them.
Remember the saying "with great power comes great responsibility?" Not everyone has the responsibility to be a gun owner. We get tested to drive a car yet any idiot can get a gun? Really?

REALLY?

Can someone explain this? (Without the "cars are a privilege not a right; gun owner ship is a right" speech. I get that part....)

Pilots are armed? I didn't see that in my trip this weekend.

Yes Keyrose, pilots have the option to carry handguns with them in flight.

In Texas you can be executed by the state if you commit murder? Yet, we still have murder. What law can we pass that will stop criminals from obtaining firearms?

Anonymous said...

Kill them before they commit the crime.

Maybe we should look at countries like japan that have tight gun regulations and no/little murder rate?

NotMyFlop said...

Why look at Japan - let's look at the country with the strictest gun laws in the Western Hemisphere... Mexico.

Japan is not the US never has been never will. Lets be the United States. A gun is only as dangerous as the IDIOT standing behind it. It matters not what controls are enacted. If someone wants one they will procure it. Amending the constitution just ties the hands of responsible owners.

Food for thought from Democracy Now:

"New Town to Newtown: How ’96 Massacre Spurred Gun Laws in Australia — and No Mass Shootings Since"

"In the wake of the Newtown killings that left 27 people dead on Friday, we go to another New Town — in Australia — the home of a mass shooting that killed 35 people in 1996. Just 12 days after what became known as the Port Arthur massacre, Australia’s government responded by announcing a bipartisan deal to enact gun control measures. There have been no mass killings since. We’re joined by Rebecca Peters, an international arms control advocate who led the campaign to reform Australia’s gun laws after the Port Arthur massacre. She also produced the landmark report, "Gun Control in the United States: A Comparative Survey of State Firearm Laws," with the Open Society Institute in New York."

Mexico also has high poverty and a fuckin turf war going on. I'd be all for them having guns.
Japan was just an EXAMPLE.
