The candidates are using such language to highlight philosophical differences between liberals and conservatives, Hayward says. Liberals believe that government can offer the best path to advancement. Conservatives believe a growing private economy provides more upward mobility than government. Why can't it be both?
Last week I talked about what the food stamp rolls actually look like. It differs from what conservatives have in mind. But putting stereotypes and conservative falsehoods aside, public assistance shouldn't be derided when the country is trying to recover from one of the worst economies ever. And it shouldn't be looked down upon when the way of doing business is not what our grandparents were used to. A lot of things are outsourced and that's left us with few choices.
Rather, Apple’s executives believe the vast scale of overseas factories as well as the flexibility, diligence and industrial skills of foreign workers have so outpaced their American counterparts that “Made in the U.S.A.” is no longer a viable option for most Apple products. That's right. We can't compete with a workforce that has tea with a biscuit for breakfast and goes on to work a 12-hour shift. And we can't have politicians bitching about putting Americans to work when the work is going overseas. Food stamps are essential for Americans when jobs aren't there any more.
I'm sure we'll hear plenty about the republican strategy tonight following the president's State of the Union Address. But I seriously doubt conservatives will have a solution on how to fix the high unemployment rate in this country. They'll just take a page from the GOP presidential candidates -- bash Obama, give tax cuts to the rich, limit regulations, and on and on and on.

You sound like one of President Obama's speech writers. think about it. Did President Obama keep the promises he made in order to get elected? Is life better 4 years later?
Leaving aside the most hate-filled rhetoric from the right, common sense fiscal conservatives do see a need for food stamps and housing assistance etc. - as a temporary safety net.
National debt from 10 trillion to 15 trillion
Unemployment from 6.8% to 9.0%
health care costs for insured up 20%
gasoline per gallon $1.68 to 3.25
800 billion stimulus down the drain with no results
60 percent of us population does not pay income taxes
45 million people on government dependency programs
Inflation of over 4% and $$ devaluation of 10% per year
This is the legacy of the food stamp president.
___take away food stamps and H.E.B. would go "bottom up"(broke)
Anon,,
Don't forget Gun running by attorney general to Mexico
And billion dollar wasteful slush fund investments in bogus
Alternative energy companies. Solyndra
fat CEO "and if I don't get a bail-out our economy will fail!!!"
Bail outs were just favors owed.
So, again, with the economy that people have to endure today, it only makes sense that more people would need assistance.
VERY POSSIBLY A LINK COULD BE MADE:
amazing the huge segment of the population who
do not understand the distinct difference between
wages and earned income,, and income earned from
interest and capital gains. and the perfectly understandable tax rates associated with these gains.
many capital gains are associated with investments made with AFTER TAX $$. already taxed at high income rates..
the food stamp pres. loves his minions to stay pathetically STUPID
Food stamps are actually supported by both Republicans and Democrats and are really nothing more than subsidies to the farming industry.
For those that don't know, the farming industry is well beyond the local farmer, it is the John Deere's, Dow Chemicals, and HEB's of the world.
So, people, it is not as simple as poor vs. wealthy. It never is, and that is what is wrong with this President and the Democratic party.
He gives a State of the Union address that leaves out just how complex our economy is and tries to sell his idea that if we tax the rich, everything will be ok.
Keyrose, you talk about moving jobs overseas, again a much more complex topic than just moving for lower wages.
Example, large company opens manufacturing plant in China. Why, to get market penetration for their product. Then through analysis they determine they can make product there (utilizing capacity and efficency models) and ship back to the US, maybe as a 100% complete product, or an assembly used to complete a product. And in doing so, they may reduce cost of that product or assembly. It is cheaper to have the plant closer to the sales point in most cases, and China has a huge market for American goods, as do most emerging economies. Complex, yes.
The only way to solve the foodstamp issue is with jobs. But that is not something the government can fix. How do I know this, pretty simple really. What president, or congress wants high unemployment. NONE do. So, if they can fix it, why do we have high unemployment? The government cannot create long term job growth. Only the private sector can do that. The government can only kill jobs through regulation, and excessive taxation.
But you say through subsidies the government can create jobs (like I spoke of earlier). But the reality is that subsidies are nothing more than the government trying to pick and chose winners based on political expediency.
Get government out of the private sector as much as possible (we still need regulation) and you will see the economy return to a constant growth economy.
Assistance or dependance?
lets keep draining the beast once i heard from someone just remember in mexico no one gets anything for free food stamps just creates lazy people depending on one check with anything in mind but the beer and carne asada every weekend
if free food for everyone is the goal
why doesn't the food stamp president attack food distributors and grocery stores??
those fat evil bastards
"gasoline per gallon $1.68 to 3.25"
1.68? When was this? lol
I think this cloud was looming waaaay before Obama came in.
Bush summer 2004, gasoline 1.60to 1.88 per gallon
