Choices

The Webb County runoff election is coming up next month and I'm starting to rethink my choices. I'll continue to support some candidates because I think they can breathe new life into their respective office, and others will get my vote for more trivial reasons. But there's this nagging little concern in the back of my head: the money.

The Laredo Times reported on each candidate's expenses, and the race that stuck out was the county judge's -- its candidates spent an enormous amount of money on their campaigns. The money leader in that race was newcomer Tano Tijerina, who spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to get his message out. It makes sense that a challenger would spend more than an incumbent; the newbie may not have the name/face recognition that a seasoned politico might have.

Still, spending close to half a million bucks on a campaign is noteworthy, and not in a good way. If I remember correctly, one person posted a comment on the LMT's message board about the money involved. He/she was unnerved by the fact that Tano had spent so much money in this troubled economy. Families are having trouble making ends meet, and here he was, burning through cash like a drunken sailor. Now, the other candidates didn't exactly run a frugal campaign either, but Tano's financial statement surely left a mark. His spending spree reveals a disconnect with working people, and an insult to the people he's choosing to serve.

What I wonder is how these people pay back these humongous amounts of dough. Each and every candidate is left with a loan that has to be honored. And this is where my cynicism comes in.

This Sunday, the Laredo Times ran an editorial where they maintain that journalistic integrity is of utmost importance. Que Fregados posted the piece. Here's a passage that applies to this post:
There's plenty of talk out there making the rounds, for example, that someboy
took kickbacks from a government contractor.

I haven't heard this rumor. I have no idea who they are referring to, but in the world of politics, this is nothing new. This sort of activity could be occurring at the city, county, or even the school level. It wouldn't be surprising, what with our community's checkered past.

Far be it for me to try to accuse Tano, or any other candidate, from taking kickbacks. But doubt arises when somebody would go through so much trouble, and money, to win a seat in local government. Their public servant salaries would never start to repay the money they owe. People might have good intentions in running for office, but their balance sheets raise my curiosity.
I may be missing something, but things just don't add up. All I know is that all this money is more than I'll ever see in my lifetime.

Whoever gets it will get perks,(NICER WORD THAN KICKBACKS ). This will definitely recoup their election expense .
As for Lame Mediocre Times they know something but it is not politically correct to disclose .

the times will not disclose because they are with that particular candidate.... for example just look at whom Mr. Green (From LMT) is dating and piece together the editorials and censorship of those not published and you can see right through it. LMT is a joke, they sell themselves out like everyone else.

Rick and Joe, Tano is a Walker and for obvious political reasons he does not mention it. That being said his family's ambition is to move the 5th International bridge to the north of mines road to benefit HIS family... Half a million spent is nothing compared the the windfall they would get... people wake up

I haven't heard the "kick back" rumor either, but it does concern me that Tano borrowed over a quarter million from his wife to run for office. What is she or anyone connected to the Walkers/Tijerinas getting back in return? Why of course, inside information about property the county is going to buy for a bridge or whatever other project.

To add to the funny business, there was an LTTE in today's paper urging people to vote for Tano because any other vote (say, Danny) would be perpetuating 3 generations of political dynasties & Tano would be an outsider to all that. (This person is also supporting Notzon, who is in it up to her eyeballs, so I'm wondering if he wrote the letter with tongue-in-cheek.)

I guess the writer forgot that Tano's aunt is a commissioner (for now), his mother works as her administrative assistant (same degree of relationship exists between those 2 that got Rick Flores in trouble when he hired Tano's dad, who still has some kind of job with the county), and Wawi's husband has a job at a JP's office he got & holds only as a political favor. Seems to me that the county is already as infested with Tijerinas as it is any other political "dynasty," so a vote for Tano would be nothing more than "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Except that Tano has access to big bucks & can continue to buy his way into office, whereas Danny does not (& if Wawi & Keko lose their run-offs, Danny *might* turn out to be a better county judge).

Interesting comments all around.

My choices for the runoff election keep changing.

DG - agree all around, but I especially like the last line about Danny possibly being able to more if Keko and Wawi went back to the private sector (full-time, that is).

But Tano came across so well and calm in the televised debate. I think his heart is in the right place.

and what about Danny Valdez?

We need to disclose his political history and possible connections before I can decide. No one is perfect, but who is the lesser of two evils?

SP: the devil you know v. the devil you don't choice. I'm more inclined to give Danny another chance with a hopefully better county commission (if 1 or both commissioners don't get re-elected). I can still kick him to the curb in 4 years. I don't think we'll get that opportunity if Tano wins.

Hey DG tell us something we don't know . Nepotism ,political favors have existed in Laredo for decades . It really doesn't matter who gets the slot it will be business as usual. Nothing will change !

The popular comment layout is common, so it is easily recognized scanning to post a comment. If the comment section is in a different format, then I am going to spend more time trying to decipher what everything means.

Just found out Monica is being supported by Joe Rubio. Is it political payback for her not exposing the whole corruption in the DA's office. Also Manuel Flores supporting her and Rosie Centeno. This seems like the Old dirty political machine trying to come back... dont be misled.
