And the Winners Are...

The big surprise of tonight's Academy Awards was The Hurt Locker winning 6 Oscars. Not only did it take the prize for Best Picture, but also for Best Director Kathryn Bigelow. This made her the first ever woman to win in the Director category!

Avatar
won three awards, but not the big ones. Good to know it's made enough money to soothe the pain though.

Another surprise was Precious upsetting Up in the Air for Best Adapted Screenplay. Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher became the first African-American to win this award!

One cool thing about the show was the tribute to the late director John Hughes as several of his actors were there together. They included Matthew Broderick, Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, and Macaulay Culkin! (No Farrah Fawcett in the "In Memoriam" segment.) :'(

I also liked that there were no full song performances, just one dance number for all the musical scores. I enjoyed Ben Stiller coming out in full Avatar makeup to present the makeup award (which Avatar wasn't nominated for!). The show did go long, but I give it an 8 overall.

The Winners:
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges, Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
Best Actress: Sandra Bullock, Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, Best Picture: The Hurt Locker
Best Animated Picture: Up, Best Musical Score: Up
Best Art Direction: Avatar, Best Visual Effects: Avatar
Best Sound Mixing: The Hurt Locker, Best Sound Editing: The Hurt Locker
Best Film Editing: The Hurt Locker, Best Cinematography: Avatar
Best Makeup: Star Trek, Best Costumes: The Young Victoria
Best Original Song: The Weary Kind (from Crazy Heart)
Best Original Screenplay: The Hurt Locker
Best Adapted Screenplay: Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Piper's Score: 7 out of 9 previously posted categories!

I was suprised the "The Hurt Locker" won. It is very unusual for the best picture to actually win the award!

It's surprising that The Hurt Locker hasn't been in Laredo theaters in recent weeks.

Gotta make a trip to Blockbuster (I haven't seen it).

LOL @ Blockbuster! Yes, it still exists. And KeyRose is a bit on the anti-technology side, que no?
