And the Academy Award goes to...

Tonight Hollywood rolls out its biggest red carpet for the 2010 Oscars. I never miss them. I love everything about the Academy Awards: the bad jokes, the prepared clips, the emotional speeches cut off by the musical interjections, the outfits, the hairdos, and even the fact that it's over three hours long! I don't mind any of it.

This year the Oscars are full of firsts, and there is a chance to make even more history tonight. For the first time in a long time, 10 films are up for Best Movie (usually only 5 nominees). Also there will be not one but two hosts: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Kathryn Bigelow may become the first-ever female Best Director for her movie The Hurt Locker. And Jeff Bridges, The Dude himself, whose first film was in 1971 will probably be walking away with this first Oscar as Best Actor for his work in Crazy Heart (after 4 previous supporting actor nominations).

This was also the year that brought us Avatar, Inglorious Basterds, The Blind Side, Up, Precious, Julie & Julia, Up in the Air, Invictus, An Education, District 9, and A Serious Man. And I'm sure you have seen every one of these nominees.

My picks for the night's biggest winners are Best Actor: Jeff Bridges; Best Actress: Sandra Bullock; Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz; Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique; Best Screenplay: Up in the Air; Best Animated Movie: Up; Best Musical Score: Up; Director: Kathryn Bigelow; Best Movie: Avatar. There always seems to be one surprise winner. We'll see who that is this year. Go get your snacks ready...

Update: Best dressed> Sandra Bullock, Penelope Cruz, Meryl Streep, Demi Moore, Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Firth
Worst dressed> Sarah Jessica Parker, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey, Jr., Zoe Saldana

I was surprisingly impressed by Avatar. Don't know if it will win though.

I really like Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds...scary tension.

Tonight at 7pm! ABC.

I don't know if Thriller was nominated for an Oscar, but it was eligible, since it was released first in the movie theatres. MJ also was nominated (& IIRC) won the award for Best Song for "Ben."
