El Metro planning drastic cut in bus service; City Council must act now

To the editor:

On Feb 22, 2010, El Metro Transit passengers will be faced with the reality of a drastic reduction in bus service.

Most bus routes will end from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This means the last time you may board a bus to take you home will be between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

For example, the last San Bernardo bus will leave downtown at 7:30 p.m.

The last Santa Rita bus will leave downtown at 7:00 p.m.

On Sundays, the reduction in hours of operation is even more drastic.

The last Convent bus on Sundays will leave downtown at 2:30 p.m.

The last Springfield bus leaves downtown on Sundays at 3:27 p.m.

For a town that props up its logistics prowess, it's doing a shitty job of providing transportation for the public. El Metro just recently raised rates for passengers, much to the chagrin of riders. Now one Letter To The Editor, written by Jose G. Arce, lets us know that routes are going to be whittled away.

To be fair, the evening buses do tend to be empty. Once I was riding on the Corpus Christi bus heading South and the driver deviated from the route thinking that there was nobody else on the bus. It looked like he was heading back to the docking station. I asked him if he could drop me off nearby. He agreed and apologized for his oversight.

Still, these early cutoff times do seem a bit drastic. The Santa Rita route is the one that goes farthest South, if I'm not mistaken. Could the 7:00 time slot be omitted and replaced with an 8:30 takeoff, so as to serve those that might be running late?

Much fuss was made of the only corporate bookstore closing last month. But what of the water main leaks that go unattended for weeks, and the disappearing bus service? Basic services are sorely lacking and delusional politicians focus on I-didn't-raise-taxes talking points.

I criticize all sitting politicians. But quite frankly, I don't see how any of them could be voted in again with the way things are going.

public service in Laredo/Webb has never been about service. it is about jobs.. Have you ever wondered what
these 10's of thousands of people do who are employed by the city/ county/ and school districts

fees and taxes continue to go up but services
are reduced. example trash pick up, metro service,

The city and county governments are a fiscal mess,
but the number one priority for most is holding on to their paychecks.... why no layoffs in government?

layoffs are coming....election time.

How many friends/relatives have been helped by a sitting politician?

And when are the El Metro firings coming?

While the city is cutting services and raising service fees for everything else, our brilliant City Council had no problem handing over a fortune in cash to the El Portal Retail Center.

Just last week council approved giving the El Portal lease holders all the concessions they demanded that were never in the original lease. The city is going to pay for their elevators, their security doors, and other amenities with tax payer money.

At the same time, most of the center is empty, they are not paying the city the percentage of sales that was stated in the contract, and the city manager refuses to show anyone the rent checks that the leaseholder is supposedly paying.

It is the absolute fleecing of Laredo. And, no one, including our local media, says anything about it.

if you owned a private business would you hire ANY
individual who sits on CITY COUNCIL, WEBB COUNTY
commissioners court, LISD or UISD.

of course not!!!

but we constantly allow substandard, incompetent,
and uneducated people to serve in elected positions.

Laredo is the way it is because Laredoans want it that way.

Wait a second, La Posada Hotel is a private business, and they have 2 sitting councilmen on their payroll. And, La Posada gets all the benefits of that arrangement.

Laredo is the way it is because the vast majority of the politicians are corrupt, whether Laredoans like it or not.

touche,,, bernman

I focused on intelligence, competence, and education and forgot that you do not need any of these to be corrupt...

thanks for pointing that out

What anon is getting at is the only reason some elected officials have seemingly "important" private sector positions has less to do with their abilities and more to do with the power of their elected offices.

bernman said...

NotMyFlop, of course, that goes without saying.

"Less to do with their abilities", it is more like absolutely nothing to do with their abilities.

What Anon asked was who would hire these guys? And, I just wanted to remind people that La Posada would. That is simply a private entity contributing to the corruption.

Or, is it that La Posada's owners are more intelligent than the politicians.

hello, well my problem is the following. Yesterday I was on my Myspace home page, and out of nowhere I got a Avg alert of a worm virus. Also known as worm32 netsky. I did everything possible to remove this virus. I think I got it removed because before that instead of a wallpaper I had a green background and a bold red text saying " system infected" I know this worm32 netsky is a fake virus. I refer, is a virus saying you got viruses and it opens your internet browsers getting you to buy some anti-virus products. Well, getting to my problem. It seems I dont have that worm32 netsky virus. But now if I go to google, bing, or any other search engine. Instead of taking me to a relevant site of the thing I search it takes me to here:http://www.everydayhealth.com/womens-health/osteoporosis/index.aspx?ga=0&xid=msek_osteoporosis&ref=D5AECA91-5D32-4B74-B11E-B05BDD1AA38B&utm_source=msek&utm_medium=CPC&utm_term=movie or some other random site. I know this is some kind of virus but what is it? I tried scanning my computer with avd but everybody knows avg sucks so that didn't do anything. I tried malwarebytes and 20min scan and nothing spybot nothing so, what can I do computer: HP operating system: XP please help santoramaa

I have recently got a new laptop with windows 7 and Norton security but within days mystery emails were being sent from my hotmail address seemingly to everyone in my contact list. The email is the same each time. I have ran a full system scan as thought it might be a virus but nothing was found any ideas what to do to stop this? santoramaa
