Distracted Driving

The city council meeting is going on right now. They are discussing texting while driving.

Gene Belmares notes that enforcement might be difficult since people text with their phones near their laps. He added that talking on a cell phone while driving is just as dangerous as texting, if not more.

Cindy Liendo Espinoza said that other forms of distracted driving, such as eating, putting on make-up, or reading, should be added to the ordinance if texting is going to be banned.

In other words what Ms. Cindy also does in HER car! Give me a break with banning those other things. TEXTING is what the main item is!
MAKE YOUR CAR A NO PHONE ZONE!!! Listen to Oprah Cindy.

Maybe when someone in their family gets hurt or worse yet causes an accident due to texting, maybe then they'll wish they voted for the ban.
Usually it takes a tragic accident to change the laws.

I really don't think city council, mayor included, would ban all cell phone use in cars. They don't have the balls.

I can see banning putting on make-up or reading in cars (seen both), but I've yet to see someone eat in their car without their eyes being on the road. Kids flying around the backseat are also distractions; are they going to ban kids in cars? What about those who blast their radios so loud that your windshield vibrates & you can't hear approaching ambulances/police/fire trucks? Are they going to ban that too? Sheesh.

How about fighting more serious crime ? LPD can not solve crime much less fight this minor misdemeanor !

___as long as they don't ban SEX in the back seat . . .

Belmares noted that this proposed texting ban is not being looked into as a form of generating revenue. It's being considered to keep our roadways safe.

The problem is the only way to enforce it is for a cop to stop you for some other violation and then take possession of your cell phone and check text history.

I have some serious civil liberty issues with that.

But, I still think we need the ban, and if a cop sees someone looking down while driving for an extended period (as tends to happen when texting), pull them over.

Driver: What seems to be the problem officer?

Cop: I pulled you over for texting.

Driver: Oh really? I wasn't texting.

Cop: I have proof.

Driver: Really?

Cop: I have my dash cam recording you looking down several times.

Driver: Since when is it illegal look down?

Point is, if you outlaw the phone as being a distraction you would need to outlaw putting on make up, eating, (loud music already is - but cops don't enforce it) and anything else that is a distraction.

good point RickEvil.

Time for Plan B.

If you're driving and notice the guy behind you looking down several times, brake.

*so KR doesn't get sued, this is satire, people. ;-)
